What is Traumatic Head Injury due to Child Maltreatment (THI-CM)?

THI-CM is defined broadly to include traumatic injury to the head (skull and/or brain and/or intracranial structures), which may also be accompanied by injury to the face, scalp, eye, neck or spine, as a result of the external application of force, typically in the form of violent shaking with of without impact to the head.

Parents or caregivers may shake their babies out of frustration, stress, or anger due to  inconsolable crying. Other caregivers may simply not know that shaking a baby can be so dangerous. Other terms that you may hear are shaken baby syndrome (SBS) or Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)
